Tadpole and duckweed in tank

Hi, I wasn't sure where to put this post, not exactly new, but no experience of this topic........
I've been adding duckweed, from my small pond to try and help control nitrate initially,  though I've found it helps to provide a  shadier area for some.
Anyway replenishing the dw this time I've inadvertently scooped up a tadpole. I'm reluctant to try and take him out unless its being the tank is an absolute no no. Any advice please? I know longer term it needs to come out but if it grows a bit it will be easier to catch it

On a side note Ive heard some fish keepers complain about dw taking over but mine gradually  disappears.
reading on the Internet I see some fish (and invertebrates ?)  eat it.

I wouldn't worry about the tadpole, but is it a frog or a newt? It would be unusual for a frog tadpole to still be in a pond so late in the year.
I have grown to like duckweed and I also find that the fish really enjoy the shelter. Fish are naturally nervous about open water above them, in the wild that's where the kingfishers etc come from ...........

Yes, it's definitely a frog tadpole, no legs yet that I can see. I was surprised, I thought it's very late myself, but  later saw a tiny but fully formed frog near the edge of the pond.
Interesting how different fish keepers have different experiences of duckweed. I give it a thumbs up.

I've seen tadpoles in my pond in October! Most of them have turned into frogs long before that so I was quite suprised to see a couple still in tadpole form.

I can't grow floating weed of any sort, it eventually dies off, I was wondering if it's my hard water

Duckweed will grow very well in hard water, but it's a plant which likes high nutrient levels. It's not actually called duckweed because ducks like it, but because it thrives in duck ponds, fertilised by duck poo and rotting bread thrown in by people. It hates strong surface water movement and water spraying onto it from above e.g. from spray bars set up that way.

I have a spray bar, and though my first introduction of duckweed into the tank ended with it gradually disappearing my second,  current addition has resulted in a bit of an expansion of the weed, not that I'm complaining.

Fiona, re your late tadpoles, I sometimes wonder if they somehow get stuck at the tadpole stage. I still have a visiting frog in the pond, I see it in there occasionally, so any stray taddys as I call them may end up as its food........... :yikes:

Something I've wondered myself
