New fish

Hey guys, I wasn’t really sure where to put this question but figured the old board was getting a bit big!

So I got some new fish at the weekend, planning to just boost my cardinal numbers up to 8. So I got my planned 4 Cardinal tetras but I also ended up with an extra different fish in the bag! I know the species is a Dwarf Rainbow as it’s the breed that was in the tank when the bag was being filled and plus he fits the description. From what I know Dwarf Rainbows are shoaling fish so here’s my dilemma; what do I do?

My current stock stands at:
8 Harlequin Rasboras
8 Cardinal Tetras
2 Ottos
A bit of a snail problem
And 1 Dwarf Rainbow.

It’s a 64 litre, 61cm long tank with an internal filter, heater set to about 25°c, a few rooted plants and ornaments and one massive chunk of water sprite that the cardinals absolutely love!

A Selection of Fish in my Fish Community Creator Tanks
Otocinclus (2) - Harlequin Rasbora (9) - Siamese Fighting Fish (male) (1) - Assassin Snail (1) - Cardinal Tetra (6) -
Note: The user may not necessarily own these fish, these are tanks that they may be building or researching for stocking purposes

Great that you have decent-sized shoals of harlequins and cardinals.

Looking at the species profile for dwarf rainbows, they should indeed be in a shoal of at least 6-8, they need a tank of at least 60x30cm footprint, and the fish grow to a size of 8cm "although usually smaller in aquaria".  You possibly could just about manage a shoal of them. However, with the ottos also in the tank, I'd say that getting a shoal of dwarf rainbows is a bit risky stocking-wise, especially as they grow quite large - and are quite active. I've seen them in the LFS and certainly wouldn't consider even the juvenile-sized ones in my tank of that footprint given how actively they swim, lovely fish though they are, never mind adult-sized ones.

I'd advise you to return the lone fish, and, if you were to get any more fish for your tank, then maybe some additional ottos in time once you're confident the tank is mature and has sufficient biofilm/algae for them to graze on.

Others who have had these fish might be able to advise further.

I agree with fcmf. Besides the space issue with a shoal of the rainbows, they are also very active fish while the rest of your fish are sedate, and the swimming activity of the rainbows would be stressful to the others.

I'm also in agreement with this.  Perhaps the store might bw generous and you could swap the fish for another otto for your inconvenience?
