Oooh. Missed that in my foggy brain day. I tend to use Latin for most things because I'm an amateur entomologist, and talking to other people (some overseas) is easier that way. Anyway, I...

Geophagus is a genus and so includes several species. not sure which one would be meant by "Geo". I believe Geophagus brasiliensis is actually usually called Pearl Cichlid while some others are called eartheaters, of various types.

I'm a professional entomologist/invertebrate specialist and so also always use latin names, less room for confusion. A while ago some government idiots insisted that all insects which are referred to in their publications should have English names so that the public would find them easier. This caused a few joke names to be produced, so now a whirligig beetle called Gyrinus urinator is known as The Artist.

Little kids learn long dinosaur names easily, but many adults seem to struggle with easier ones for fish etc.
