Water Parameters

Hi all
Not a great concern but had an ammonia reading of 0.25 couple of weeks ago so did a 50% water change. I did my weekly water change last night as per usual. Just tested my water today and although ammonia is now zero, my nitrite is now reading 0.25. I don,t think I am over feeding. If anything I feel I am giving too little as I have read several times on here how overfeeding is a common mistake to make, but what else could it be? Its not a major problem yet but I should have double zeros all the time now as I have had fish in a couple of months since my fishless cycle ended

It sounds like something happened to cause a micro spike - that's one that's smaller than a mini spike. The ammonia would show up first, then nitrite. Since the ammonia is zero again, just keep on top of the nitrite till it drops as well.

Have you had any deaths?
Has someone used a aerosol or air freshener near the tank? Or paint? Something that could harm the bacteria.
Someone used your water change bucket for some non-fish use?

Sometimes these things happen and we never find out why. The best thing to do is keep monitroing the water and see if things settle down OK. if not, we'll have to do some research into what's going on.

Thanks for reply Sue. Of the things you mention, only thing that has happened is I have lost 2 panda corys over the last 3 weeks. I removed them as soon as I noticed but could have been a day, maybe two. I have my water change buckets set aside and I know for a fact that they have not been used for anything else
