Hi guys

With my new tank coming wednesday im looking at building some caves for my fish from slate, as i like close to the Yorkshire dales theres quite abit of it around, is it safe for me to use in a fish tank if i boil it first???

i have slate in my tank (was bought of ebay as decorations for fish tank)seems ok in my tank but remember if your getting slate from natural resources that the edges are sharp so make sure to smooth them off aswell as a good boil wash

I don't think slate would have any air pockets so it should be OK to put in a pan of water and boil it. However, if the slate looks as though it may have air pockets, boiling could cause the rock to explode as the air gets hot. In this case, pour boiling water over the slate.

Ok thanks guys, ive had slate before but bought it at pets @ home but id rather look for sizes i want than pay for small pieces. Looks like a kettle and bucket job then Sue lol

i put all my new rocks / slate and bogwood in the dishwasher when the other half is out

Boiling it is a complete waste of time. There is no possibility of anything dangerous to fish lurking in or on it. Another fish keeping myth. Just wash it to get rid of surface dirt.

Haha. I boiled up my bog-wood in MrsB's best pan while she was out!

Boiling wood damages the fibres so it breaks down quicker.

Oh.... okee-dokee, I'll refrain from that in future. However; I suppose that makes it easier for the Java Fern to get a grip.
