Was thinking of getting a few of these but see they need low nitrates, mine is 40ppm out of the tap.
I have seen chemical solutions out there that claim to lower nitrates but does anyone know if they actually work?

The plant Hygrophilia polysperma is an excellent Nitrate remover, and so is Amazon frogbit.

sorry to report the loss of one of my panda corys, just did a head count while doing a water change and was missing one. Couldn't see it anywhere but eventually did entangled in the leaves of one of my artificial plants. must have become stuck as it swam from top of tank to the bottom

Hi Andy,

Sorry to hear about your poor panda cory :(. I have these too, and they're wonderful little creatures. There are some warnings on the cory sites that plastic plants are not ideal for them as they can damage themselves and/or get caught up on the plastic. This is to do with their 'armour plating' form of scales. They really would be better with some nice soft live plants. Mine love to rummage in the greenery and also to sit on the leaves and rest up.
I don't know how  many you have, but at least 6 is a good number as their characters really come out when they feel secure.

Just out of interest, why don't you want live plants? They really help with the nitrates and you can keep the tank interesting by pruning as needed.

Hi Resa, I had 5 but now down to 4. I just would rather concentrate on the fish for now without having to worry about plants too. I do have 2 small java fern on bogwood but that is all
