Hi

Can someone just confirm my thinking. Added dose 2 and tested today and ammonia is 0ppm. Can i just check i dont add any ammonia, check in two days and if still 0ppm, then add dose 3, the 1ppm dose.

Think i'm right but just want to check.

Cheers

Yes that's right. Zero ammonia today (Monday) and zero ammonia again on Wednesday - add one third of the ammonia you used at the start. Then keep testing every second day, adding 1 ppm ammonia whenever you get two zeros, until the day when nitrite is less than 1ppm.

Thanks @Sue

I did a nitrite test today (i know a day early but was curious) and they are zero, although as you can see i had them in a previous post. So will check for ammonia tomorrow which i guess will be nil(hopefully). Will add 1ppm and check two days later and guessing both will be zero.

I'm wondering if the additive i put in has speeded up the cycle, and possible if i had just done 1ppm ammonia at start that it might have been even quicker. I wouldnt say it is an instant cycle product, but maybe in an emergency like setting up a quarantine or sickness tank that it would do the job. Although think will always be better to either do a fishless cycle or seeded media.

If nitrite is below 1 ppm when you test tomorrow and ammonia is zero, add 3 ppm ammonia and test on Thursday.

When there is no bacterial starter, it takes a while for nitrite to drop below 1 ppm, so you have to go through testing every 2 days for a while, adding 1 ppm ammonia when there are two ammonia zeros and nitrite still high.

But in your case, the bacterial starter seems to have helped the nitrite eaters and nitrite is dropping faster than if you hadn't used it. So you will reach the "two zero ammonias and nitrite below 1 ppm" stage a lot faster.
If when you test tomorrow you have the second zero ammonia and nitrite is under 1 ppm, you have already reached stage #10 so you can go to stage #11.

@Sue

I need your experitse. Added 3ppm ammonia yesterday, as had 2 tests of 0ppm ammonia and also had zero nitirite. Just done a test and have 0.5ppm ammonia and 2ppm nitrite.

So am a little stuck as to what to do next. Any ideas?

My guess would be to add 1ppm.

Add nothing yet.

You need two tests with zero ammonia before you add any more. Today's test showed 0.5 ppm ammonia. So test again in 2 days, and again in 4 days. If both of those are zero, then add 1 ppm ammonia. But if the test in 2 days is not zero, but 4 days is zero, you need to wait until 6 days test also shows zero before adding ammonia.

You need two zeros; 0.5 is too high.
