Impeller difficult to put back in

Hello
I've always had problems refitting the impeller back in the aqua 750  filter after cleaning. My hands/fingers  either aren't strong enough or I'm doing something wrong. Can't find anyone else posting about this as a problem,
Can anyone help please?  :) :)
Many thanks

Hello. Welcome aboard.

Hmmm. I don't have that filter but expect most impellers are very similar.

The impeller shouldn't be difficult to replace. It can be a bit tricky removing it due to the magnetism.

Do you still have the instructions? If not you might find them here: http://www.aquaone.co.uk/instructions.php

Perhaps the instructions might offer a diagram or some specific advice about cleaning and replacing the impeller.

Hi Rosaleen, welcome to the forum

And sorry you have a problem.

Just so we know which filter you mean, I googled aqua 750 filter and it comes up with the aqua one aquis 750 external filter - is this the filter you have? And this the manual?

If it is the one, it seems as though you have to unscrew a cover to take the impeller out, then after cleaning I assume you have to screw the cover back on again (the manual doesn't actually say that but if you unscrew it to get it off, you must screw it back on). Is this the bit you are having trouble with?

I don't have any filter like this myself, but would it help to use some of the lubricant mentioned for sealing the O ring around the thread of the impeller cover to make it move more easily? Other than that, is there anyone with strong fingers who could give you a hand?

Simon, you posted while I was typing. The manual doesn't have any suggestions about refitting the impeller other than making sure it is rotating freely in the shaft.

Just been thinking.

The manual shows removing the cover with the impeller attached to it. The diagram of the impeller also shows there are two rubber stoppers on the ends. Presumably these push into a hollow at the bottom of the impeller well and another in the cover. My Eheim aquaball and biopower internals are like this.
When you refit the impeller, do you push it into the impeller well then try to fit the cover, or do you push the impeller into the cover, then put it into the impeller well?

Hello
Sorry, I didn't explain it very well, it's not the actual impeller, it's the cover that goes back on top of it, it just seems v difficult. I used to leave the job to my partner while I cleaned all the media but now he can't do it due to ill health. I should add that his fingers were strong and yet  he always found it awkward to put the cover  back on too
I can't read your posts at the same time as I'm typing , so  I'm not be able to fully answer any other questions

Sue just read your second post, re the sequencing of replacing the impeller and cover.
To be honest I can't remember . The last time I did it was about 2 years ago, as I said I relied on my partner to do it after that because of my difficulty.   The filter is now overdue for a clean so wanted to see if there are any suggestions/ideas from anyone who has an aqua and/or a similar experience that might help

Hi Rosaleen,

Having "googled" the filter and its impeller cover, could it be something to do with this http://www.fishpetsreptiles.co.uk/products/detail.php?prodcat=27&prodtype=56&prodid=872 - perhaps it's broken, dislodged slightly or needs replaced?

Well found, fcmf. The manual doesn't mention there is an O ring for the impeller cover.

Rosaleen, does your filter have an O ring that fits between the cover and the lid? If it doesn't that could be the problem.

Hello again and many many  thanks to fcmf.  :wave:I wouldn't have thought to check if it was anything to do with a piece of equipment possibly missing.
Don't know if it has/had an O ring. I've just ordered one now, thanks to your link info and will wait for it to arrive then open the filter up.
I've been v reluctant to try cleaning the filter now  as I remember the last time I did it it took me half an hour(well felt like half an hour) to put the impeller, that is the cover, back in. My partner wasn't around to help on that occasion. As the fingers were getting more sore and weaker I honestly thought I'd never manage it. This time I'd even contemplated cleaning the filter  but  not 'disturbing' the impeller, to avoid a possible catastrophe.
Sue many thanks for your help too. Are you the same sue who has been on think fish for a number of years? I used to come on to  the forum regularly when I first started about 7or 8 years ago and the sue who posted then was a mine of information and advice, helping me every step of the way.I know I'd have given up on keeping fish without that sue's help.
After I became slightly proficient(well not a totally complete novice) it coincided with my laptop becoming
tempremental and  aging to a snails pace. so eventually I pretty much gave up using it.   Now have  an iPad which is
great.
Will let you know what happens, not sure how long the o ring will take to arrive. Thanks again

Ps I still have the manual and looking at it found I have 1050 and there's a diagram of the head unit with an arrow pointing saying O ring  somewhere near but not actually on  the impeller bit

Yes, I'm the same Sue. I was on the old forum, and when it came back on the new host in 2012 (after about 6 months being down) I was the first member to sign up again  :)

I had also noticed that the only O ring mentioned in the manual is the one that fits on the inlet pipe. But then in Troubleshooting, leaking section, they say to check that all the O rings are in place, implying there's more than one. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they only mention the one O rings as that's the one that would cause a leak if it wasn't fitted properly, or worn out. An O ring under the impeller cover won't cause a leak, just make it tricky for the owner.

Has the water flow slowed down at all? If it has, maybe do what you suggest and clean the filter media but leave the impeller for now.

Hello sue, really  nice to 'speak' to you again after all this time. I remember trying to come back on before and having difficulties, that might/ must have been the same time as the site was down
After my last post just now, I reread  the aqua retailer  website info and saw it promises next day delivery if the item is in stock, so will wait a couple of days to see if it arrives and if does  then decide whether to risk opening the cursed impeller cover......................

Ps again - sorry, as I can't read the post to which I'm replying I can't remember all the details in that post. So anyway re the flow it's ok,  I think,  but not the  same as when the filter's just been cleaned. I tend tonnage quite long gaps between cleaning as the media doesn't seem to get dirty/ very dirty at all
