Hmmm, I thought polishing pads were made of filter wool? Though some filters may have specific pads designed for that model which are made of something else.

Now I have time (husband was nagging me to turn my laptop off last night) I see that you have a Fluval external, and Hagen make polishing pads for their Fluval externals. Their description says
Quote
These extra thick micro-fine polyester pads
which sounds like they are just extra thick filter wool. Though they could be denser than typical filter wool.

You could always try a pack and see if they do make a difference. And let us know if they do or not  :)

I know where you're coming from. I had a lot of fine particles in my tank for a long while and was disappointed that I couldn't solve the problem at first.

I added filter wool and didn't notice  a huge difference.

I added some Easy Life Fluid Filter Medium and that didn't make any difference either.

But, I persisted with the filter wool, changing it every two or three weeks as it soon got clogged up.
I made sure I was getting good flow through the filter and that the filter wool was the last media in the sequence and gradually, eventually I started to notice the water becoming clearer.

There are chemical products marketed that claim to clear water but these use a method called Flocculation.

This system can be very effective at removing fine particulates, but there can be a serious side-effects where fishes gills are adversely affected.

I'm not certain which products contain flocculants and which of those might use a fish-safe solution.

I only mention it so that you can bear it in mind and not just blindly buy the first product that sounds like it will solve the issue.

I'd recommend sticking with the wool and changing it fairly frequently before considering another solution.

hi
when i first started keeping fish :isay: i bought that stuff, and that was the last time i did.
i'd rather use the filter wool.
i put the noodles and rings in the lower baskets, and the wool in the upper two,
is this wrong ?

It probably doesn't matter too much, but the generally accepted idea is that you go from coarse to fine, so if your filter is set up so the water flows upwards through the media you've done it correctly.

Hopefully you'll begin to notice a difference.

filter wool works for me with no problems.
i put some in a small corner filter which i run alongside my external filter with the aim of polishing the water, extra circlation and is a handy back up filter if the main unit ever failed.
i only ever used flocculent chemicals once and as soon as i put it in my tank the water became extremely cloudy so i changed the water to get rid of it straight away. never again!
