A warning from experience: Bloodworm allergy

After a quick google tonight I have discovered I’m allergic to bloodworm... and it’s not an uncommon thing.

I’ve been having weird sneezing fits randomly in the evenings (after feeding the fish - but I’d not made this link!)

The reaction gets worse each time - not significantly but it definately does get worse over time - I’d say I’ve had around 15 to 20 sneezing fits and indeed they have got worse over this time - by sneezing fits I mean unstoppable continuous sneezing for a number of minutes. The last couple of times this has been for a more extended period of time, accompanied by a slight headache and a feeling of being very blocked up and difficulty breathing through my nose.

I got some on my finger tonight (didn’t know) and scratched the bottom of my nose (I could smell it at this point and went to wash my hands) 15 to 20 minutes of CONSTANT sneezing and now i can’t breath through my nose properly and the nagging headache is back - last time this lasted over 36hours... at least it has allowed me to identify the issue and prevent it happening again

I was keen to ensure others were aware of this to ensure it doesn’t happen to you too!!

Here’s an article by an author I know which gives a bit of info...

Wow - I've never heard/read of this before, and it's surprisingly common according to the article. Well done for figuring out the cause of the sneezing fits and then making this discovery, and in turn drawing our attention to it and its symptoms.

Hopefully, you'll somehow be able to avoid it, either by getting someone else to feed it or else by providing the fish with alternative menu choices.

I still sound quite blocked up tonight though feel significantly better, I am tired from it all though and I only worked a half day today too...

Mrs Matt is feeding the puffers from now on. I’ve never got them eating anything else but will give it a go for sure when we are through the food we have.

I'm lucky that I just have a skin reaction to bloodworm - if I get any on my hands the skin on my fingers on the sides next to other fingers itches like mad. Someone once suggested it was a reaction to frozen cubes, but why doesn't frozen daphnia or brine shrimp provoke this reaction?

I would definitely try to avoid going anywhere near bloodworm. If the reaction increases with exposure, you could end up with an asthma-like reaction, and that is not pleasant. Severe asthma attacks can kill.
