Creating my community

I have been playing around with our community creator and Aqadvisor along with some books and here is my ideal crew for my tank.

2 x Honey Gourami (m&f) and/or German Blue Ram
5 x Gold Lazer Cory
10-12 Neon Tetra

The only thing I’m not completely sold on is wether I’ll go with the honeys or the ram.
Any advice or ideas welcome  :)

A Selection of Fish in my Fish Community Creator Tanks
Pygmy Cory (6) - Sparkling Gourami (1) - Ember Tetra (10) - Marbled Hatchetfish (6) - Cardinal Tetra (12) - Sterbas Cory (6) -
Note: The user may not necessarily own these fish, these are tanks that they may be building or researching for stocking purposes

Personally I'd go with the gouramis. Simply because rams do better in warmer water than neons, and especially cories.

Agreed, I’d also go with 4 so ang aggression is spread out a bit and not always targeted at the less dominant of a duo.

Thanks for the advice and Honeys it will be, when you say 4 @Matt do you mean 3 female 1 male? Or 2 of each?

Some colour morphs of honey gourami are easier to tell the gender, some are not. There are three colour variants I'm aware of: natural (easiest), yellow (not as easy as natural) and red (hard). Yellow and red are more common in shops that natural as most people seem to want pretty coloured fish and natural females are a beigey silver.

Let us know which colour variant you'll be getting and we can give you some tips.

Thanks for the confusion  :rotfl I just wanted Honeys I didn’t realise there was varieties. I guess I would want natural ones but don’t know what my LFS would have in stock.

@barneyadi It’s a 60 L  I know that I need to watch my stocking levels but I’m glad I mentioned it now as if I need 4 honeys I need to adjust my figures.

I have a 54L and so have a fairly good 'feel' for what's possible / not stocking-wise - that does sound high to me but the CC will give a more definitive answer. There are a few fish, cories in particular (eg melanotaenia, trilineatus), which Seriously Fish says would be ok in a 42.5-litre tank and a small group - I've always wondered whether they've updated their profiles on these particular species as they seem contrary to their usual advice of large groups and larger tanks and the fish themselves are not dimunitive (5.5-6.0cm). So, if you do find yourself overstocked with your proposed suggestions, then alternative smaller versions might be pygmy/hastatus/habrosus cories (even panda cories tend to be large nowadays) rather than the gold laser cories and sparkling gourami rather than honey gourami (albeit they look nothing like the honeys).

Thanks for your advice, I’m going to take a look at your suggestions. Having a look on CC and Aqadvisor ill be either 100% or overstocked if I stick to current format.

I'd just like to point out that the colour of the gold stripe corys would tone nicely with the honey gouramis.
I admit that colour co-ordination isn't everyone's biggest reason for choosing specific fish  ;D

The red gouramis in the link are the hardest ones to sex. You have to go by the fins alone, which isn't reliable as juvenile males often look like females.

Whichever calculator you use, most of them allow too many fish. I would never go beyond 75% of what they say.

Also you could keep a single honey gourami... I must admit I do like the sparkling gourami fcmf suggested
