Hi everyone I'm quite new to keeping fish, it was my son's idea , he wanted to use his birthday money to get some fish, ( his mate had some) so off we went to get them. He's only 6 and the guppies caught his eye, beautiful colours, so we got a tank set it up waited a few weeks for it to settle down and went back for his guppies we got six all different colours ,and boom we were both hooked. 9 months later we got a bigger tank( record 800) and more fish of course and plants and rocks, and we got our eye on another bigger tank. But all is not Rosie as we've been losing the guppies recently, only got 2 left , feeling a bit flat about that. So we're looking for more info on the whole subject of fish keeping and where we'd like to go with the tank! Looks like I found the right place, so much information here, gonna take a while to get through it all.

Hi,

Guppies are notoriously weak fish these days - they are very inbred to get those pretty colours. Breeders will breed from less than perfect fish, resulting in weaknesses being bred into the fish.

The other reason could well be the fact that (I presume) these guppies went through a fish-in cycle, which reduces a fish's life expectancy. Read up on cycling, both fish-in and fishless, to find out what I mean - there are a couple of threads by me in the 'filtration and cycling' section to get you started and also this article.

Looks like MTS has set in - that's multiple tank syndrome, as incurable condition of fishkeepers, characterised by the desire for more and more tanks
