Title: Me again....
Post by: ColinB on March 06, 2014, 08:25:10 AM
Hello old and new members. I thought I'd re-introduce myself 'cos all my login info, post count, messages etc had been deleted while I was away.

For those who knew me.... I get a bad case of the winter blues, or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and this winter has been so gray and grim that it hit me far worse than usual. So I tend to curl up and hibernate and keep to myself. A few weeks of bright, crisp weather would've been all it took.... but alas, it was not to be. I feel a winter holiday coming on for next year!

So I'm back.... with very little to report apart from one dead guppy. He was very old, so no probs there.

Looking forward to making lots of flippant comments and being no particular use to anybody.

Colin

Hi Colin, we'd been wondering where you were  ;D We'd noticed from your posts that were labelled as guest and that you were no longer in the member list. I'm sorry to hear you have not been well; hope you are feeling better now that the sun has made a re-appearance.

There have been some changes in the last couple of weeks. We now have a new admin, Robert, who has taken over the website running from Peter - Peter told me that Robert is a better web developer than him.

And I'm a moderator  :o .

Hi Colin, Long time no "see". Welcome home!

Looking forward to making lots of flippant comments and being no particular use to anybody.
You're batting 1000 so far!  :)) (As you can see my ram-tank-like charm has survived the Great Flood!)

Thanks Sue........ *gasp* I am not worthy........(http://www.oshatrain.org/courses/images/700kowtow.gif) ;D ;D ;D

Does this mean I can't be rude to you anymore??

Thanks Steve..... glad to see nothing's changed with you. Can we gang-up on Sue??

Hi ColinB

Sorry to hear you've been unwell and apologies about your loss of posts. I do know that at some point in the past (before my tenure)   there was a big loss of data which was unrecoverable.

If you can let me know the username you had, then I'll look to see if there's a way of attributing your past efforts (assuming I can find them)

Since Colin is off line at the moment -
He was ColinB before as well. This (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,554.msg6158.html#msg6158) is one of the last posts I could find for him.

Yay    You're back!!!
I'm glad you're feeling a bit brighter.....Spring has sprung!

Lots of changes, huh? It's still the best fishy-site around though....and their sister sites, like 'Thinkcat', are up too! Robert has done lots of work on the site and is very open to suggestions...but probably only polite ones :)) Me, being particularly shallow, especially likes the new little icons ;) On that subject, what does the little man with the shades and the rather fetching hairdo mean, I wonder? It doesn't say when you hover over him ??? I'd better not use that one until I know ;)

Now, let me see, what else has happened? Sue has told you she's now a Mod. I think that means she gets a company scooter and a parka :) She does get a badge....bigger fishies than everyone else!
Jesnon is still here...although she apparently has spent a couple of weeks in a well known frozen food supermarket recently...on holiday, she said ???
No sign of Dutchy for a while, so I am really hoping that it's not because of the flooding, given he lives in Dorset.
Steve, as you saw, is still here...oh joy of joys ;D He sadly, was unable to get a refund from the charm school he attended :)) :)) :))

We have lots of new folks too, so should have some good pics coming, as there's lots of new tanks up and coming.

Sorry to hear about your guppy, but as you said, at least he was old.

Looking forward to having someone else on here...other than me, who can be of no discernible use to anyone for anything ;D Except of course, that you know about science, water chemistry, fish, plants, tanks....mmm..so not much really ;)

Welcome Home

Thanks for the welcome, Robert. I had 500odd posts (alot of them very odd and pointless)....

Is the NSA watching ThinkFish as a hotbed of sedition.... or does the verification interrogation cease after a number of posts??? ;) ;)

:) Hi ColinB

I'm assuming it's asking you to verify far too often? Let me take a look at that and see if I can reduce it.

:)

Edit: Ok, you shouldn't see verification after making 3 posts. let me know if it persists!

Thanks for re-setting my post count Robert....... it looks like I spend far too long on here now :)) :))

And it looks like I've been classified as "Harmless" (or more likely... "pointless") as the verification interrogation has ceased. That water-boarding was getting a bit tiresome  ;) ;)

Now that you've got your post count back you could always apply to join me - Robert has been looking for volunteers here (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,765.0.html). Shouldn't leave all that power in my hands  ::)

Sue, Sue, Sue. You, of all people, know that I'm neither sensible nor responsible enough to be entrusted with any sort function on this forum other than blathering on about stuff other people know far more about. I wish it were otherwise, but my fishkeeping experience is too limited for me to feel comfortable being remotely thought of as someone guruish (is that a word?)...... especially where living creatures are concerned. I'm more than happy if I actually remember to feed my fish..... and I'm so weak that my fish can fool me into believing that I've actually forgotton if I've remembered correctly or not :-[

I'm more than happy with your benevolent dictatorship  ;D Democracy seems to be having a hard time in the world at the moment.

Hey Guys!!

This thread has had me chuckling away and as I was in the reply bit to see what all the smiley men meant I thought I'd pop in and say Hello!

I'll give you all on an update on my pitifully small tank and it's seemingly never ending problems tomorrow when I've tested my ammonia!!!!  ::)

Colin, you may be good at making pointless posts but they are very funny and I share your curse of SAD only mine is all year round and I'm taking lots of strong pills to remedy it, so anyone who can cheer me up it a splendid chap!! :))

I would like to assume the role of person who asks the most really stupid questions and who doesn't really seem to know what she's on about (it's the drugs!! :P) unless it's already taken!!!

Bye for now.

 ;)

Hello FishCake

I think I was just reading your post on ThinkCat.... but that was more than 5 minutes ago so it really could've been anyone! ;D I, too, am owned by a cat so I shall probably appear over there at some stage - MrsB and I are on the hunt for a couple of kittens at the mo'. Photos will follow.

However; this is an excuse for a gratuitous cat photo..... meet Fogarty:

Sorry to hear you're a SAD sufferer too - I think it takes one to know one, if you know what I mean - though I definitely improve when I can get outside, get some photonic irrigation and start photosynthesizing ;D

Resa, I would be honoured to be your deputy and will try my hardest not to be as stupid as you so you can maintain managerial privileges!!!!  (what ever they may be!!??)  :))

Jesnon, my tank is only 30 litres (26.6 if you want to be picky!!!)  What size is yours?   I want a bigger one but we have no room so it will have to wait until we have a bigger house to put it in (ha ha - fine chance!!)  :(

I would like to upload some pics of my critters but don't know how to re-size photos. Any ideas?

Just an FYI - I've upped the allowed image size to 2 megabytes and am experimenting with an automatic resize function :)

The old forum, on the previous host, had an easy to use way of attaching photos. You just clicked on the photo on your computer, and it put the pic in the text wherever you wanted it. That is the thing I think most of us from the old forum missed when the site came back with the new host. We didn't like having our photos at the bottom of the page  :D

I do realise that different hosts will have different ways of doing things, but is there any way to change to being able to put photos in the middle of the text?

Hi Sue

With this software as it is no.. :(

The issue is that the current software just doesn't work like that. I wish it did, but it doesn'y. It could be made to work like that but it would mean a big recode or an upgrade to a different brand of forum software which would inevitably lead to other functions breaking too.

When I find the time, I will look and see if there's another short term fix, but for now it's likely to stay as is.

It is on my roadmap though :)

The way to plonk piccies in the body of the text is to upload your piccies to a hosting site like photobucket or picassa. Then link to them with the [IMG] code.

Robert - I didn't think it would be possible as Peter would probably have done it when he moved to this host  ;D

Colin - tried that with Photobucket but my photos all came out different sizes. I like my photos to conform to the same size and shape  ;D It's probably due to me missing something obvious  :-\

Well yes thanks ColinB that is a work around, but I take Sue's point in that it would be nice to just upload an image to ones  post and see it where you wanted it. Less rigmarole! :)

Oh. I use picasa and everything seems similar in that - I've never tried photobucket, but I know alot of people on the other forum I frequent (not a fishy one - piscine or otherwise ;D) use photobucket and the piccies are all of a similar size.

True. I suppose (guess/assume) that this is a hang-over from dial-up days and forum sotware deliberately stopped people from trying to upload large files. With so many people on broadband and super-fast mega this'n'that these days perhaps it's not so important now - but software hasn't caught up?

I dunno - I'm just blathering really. ???

Changed from width="200" to width=200

The image above had only {img width=300}http etc etc to start with and it automatically sorted out the height it needed (163px) to keep the photo in width/height ratio.

This is wierd! My post consisted of 4 img tags. I overrode the width and height on the latter 3. When I posted it, I only saw the original picture followed by three img tags.  When you quoted it back, I got the first 2 pictures followed by two tags, when I replied to your quote I got 4 pictures!

What's stranger still is that none of them actually correspond to the image on photobucket!

When I first saw your post there was only the first picture and three img tags. When I quoted your post I edited it (to see if it worked) by removing the " from around the 200, 300 etc. I then tried to see what would happen if I only put the hieght in, and it worked.

However; as the original image was Angelina Jolie then why there's a gourami in the photos is anyones guess. :rotfl:

According to the documentation (http://www.bbcode.org/examples/?id=10) the quotes are required.
