Title: Tyrannical Kribs
Post by: Alex_N on September 27, 2015, 08:33:45 PM
Just a brief warning this is going to get graphic very quickly.
Some will know my Kribs have wrigglers, I know they can get aggressive but to the point of attacking and killing?
I had 4 male guppies, a couple of days a go, that went to 3, then 2, one found trapped in the filter intake.
Now I've just witnessed the final guppie being mutilated by the male krib. All of the guppies fins have been torn off.
There was nothing I could do by the time I saw the attack.
Thankfully the Penguin Tetras are to quick for the male krib.
I know the Kribs can be aggressive but to the point of killing?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately, that sounds like breeding kribs. And also unfortunately, guppies make 'good' victims as they have large fins to attract attention and are slow swimming making them easy targets.

And if your kribs have bred once, they'll do it again.

The only solutions to your problem would appear to be to keep nothing but fast swimming fish with these kribs or to set up another tank just for the kribs. The problem with the latter one is that once the baby kribs reach a certain size, the parents will spawn again and see the first brood as a threat to the next; you'd need to remove the growing babies as soon as the parents showed signs of imminent spawning.

I'm sorry I can't be more help  :(

I thought that would be the answer.
The Penguins ain't behaving as they were either, I think they're stressed by the whole scenario.
I've got a buyer for the fry's when they're old enough so I may have to pass on the parent's as well. I haven't got the space for a tank that would be large enough for them. Or the disposable cash either for that matter.

We've seen the fry this morning, tucked away in a tiny crevice so they do have a reason for being aggressive.
It was a bit shocking to witness to be honest.
We've decided to keep them and just keep a careful eye on them.
