It's something I'm toying with. I prefer plakat bettas, those with short fins, but they are hard to come by. I do see one from time to time but you can guarantee that when my current betta dies I won't be able to find one for months.

So.....
Should I move all the shrimps from the 50 to the 26 litre tank, then move the trio of peacock gobies (gudgeons) from the 180 to the 50. The 50 does have the same footprint as my old 60 litre so it should be big enough for them. Or do I leave everything where it is and add ammonia to the 26 litre for maybe months till I can find a plakat.
Decisions, decisions.

I'm thinking about it all now as I've had my betta for 19 months and he is starting to show his age - resting on things more and more, tail getting a bit ragged etc. He still goes mad when he realises it's food time which is a good sign.

Hi FC, sorry to hear about Stanley.

I think a shrimp tank is great idea - I don't have extensive experience of keeping shrimp (I currently just have a couple of Amano's in my main tank and then a small shrimp tank with 6 Black & White Crystal Shrimp) but I must say that they seem to be far less problematic than fish!

Sue, I think that's a difficult decision, but you'll know what to do come the day.  :)

Fishcake, I think a shrimp tank sounds a fab idea - there are some lovely colours to choose from (though I think I've read somewhere that if you breed 2 different types together the babies are all sludge brown in colour?). They also sound like really interesting little creatures from what I've heard. I think I might add some amano shrimps to my community tank next year - the other half would go mad if I got another tank! :D

If you mix different coloured form of the same shrimp species, yes they will end up sludge brown. For instance, Neocaridina heteropoda includes red cherry shrimp. There are also yellow and blue varieties of this species and they will breed together giving brown offspring.

FC

Glad you aren't going to bin the hobby.

Shrimps sound a great solution. I'm going to have to wait until after Christmas to get my 240L in due to decorating problems, and an thinking of using my 19L QQT to house some shrimps for a while.

Shrimps sound great and glad you're sticking with it. Just remember the dechlorinator (I'm sure you will!) I lost two Red Cherry Shrimp after a 20% water change when I completely forgot! I was gutted!

Very sensitive to copper too.
