Hi all sorry haven't posted for a while due to family problems. However as usual forced to by a problem.
I have had 1 or 2 deaths daily for last few days. Water parameters were nitrate up a bit 20- 40 now 10 after 55% change yesterday during which I found 2 young guppy bodies. Day before that 1 young platy and yesterday and today another 3 young Plath's. There was an adult platy with fin clamp that was not eating and showing a sunken belly so I decided to use oil of clove on that one in case he was the problem. All other fish look OK and are feeding and youngsters seem to die suddenly with no outward abnormality. Anything I should be doing please!!!! Thanks Tom

Don't have enough experience to help with your problem Tom but just wanted to say sorry for your losses. Sandra

Is it just livebearers that are dying? One aspect of your water to check on is the hardness, which you should be able to find on your water company's website. Of all the fish in your signature, livebearers prefer hard water while the others prefer it soft. If your water is soft it could be that the livebearers can't cope with it.

Sunken bellies can be not eating through to bacterial or parasitic infections. Did the affected fish show any signs of worms - red threads hanging from the anus when motionless?

Did the problems start just after buying new fish? It is known for new fish to introduce a disease.

Other than that, I'm afraid I don't know  :(

Thanks Sandra.

Hi Sue No new fish introduced to tank for at least 2 months. It is just live bearers that have issues and it is fish born in the tank that are dying. I used to have coral sand in my filter to harden water as we do have very soft here in Scotland however I took it out some weeks ago as was going too much other way. I noticed that my Ph Gh and Kh last few times tested have started falling 6.8, 107 and 36ppm respectively yesterday. Ph was 7.6 at one point when sand was in filter and Gh 143ppm. The fall is slight and gradual and still within OK limits I thought for the guppies and Platys.

The fish I euthanised was very unhappy looking and had not been feeding for about a week others were beginning to bully it and it swam backwards a lot but no I did not see any red threads though it had some very white poo (guess it must have been eating something)

No further problems this morning but concerned as going on holiday at end of week for a fortnight leaving my son with responsibility of fish  :(

I think I'd be inclined to put coral sand back in the filter but less of it than you had before. Just enough to increase the hardness a bit.

You need to make sure your son knows the importance of removing any dead fish he might find.
