Title: Large lump on side of new fish
Post by: Puffin on August 31, 2014, 04:18:58 PM
Just bought some more ember tetra to up the numbers to 11.
Getting them home, they are still in their bag in the tank, I notice one has a large ugly looking lump on its side, and another has a big swollen belly.
I'm attaching some photos and would be grateful for any advice.
I wish the shop were round the corner, I'd just take them straight back!

It's the fish in the middle in both photos. Looks likes a sort of bubble inside the fish.

I don't think I like the looks of that  :-\ Do you have a quarantine tank? If not, callous as it may sound, I would put that one down rather than risk the main tank.

I've had a search online but can't find anything similar, only people describing this symptom but not getting any answers to what it is! I've put it in the shrimp tank for now, should really have euthanised as it's too cold in there really.
I'm a bit cross I didn't see it in the shop, but I guess you look a lot more closely when you are acclimatising fish in your tank.

Update, lumpy fish is still alive in the shrimp tank, constantly swimming against the side, looks like he's trying to get out.
Looked like he was on his last legs last night, so there's been some improvement.

That's good news. But I'd still keep it away from the other fish till you are sure what it is. Shrimps don't tend to catch fish bugs and vice versa so it and the shrimps should be safe together.

No, that's what I thought.
Thanks Sue.
Better keep an eye on the other new ones too.

Day two, lumpy fish still alive, still spending all it's efforts trying to swim through the wall of the tank. Not interested in the bloodworm the others are going crazy over in the aquanano.
