Title: Gourami white blob on nose
Post by: Lynne W on September 24, 2018, 07:19:01 PM
hi all, things have been going well in the tank since the last update, but you'll hopefully see from the photo that one of the gourami has a white spot on her nose. It's been there for a few days now, and doesn't seem to be getter any worse but not any better either. She's eating fine and still chasing the smaller ones.

I'm not sure what it is and whether an injury that will heal itself. My concern is given the last time I put a sickly gourami in the hospital tank it pretty much died instantly and I'm concerned about moving her in case it cause more harm that good.

I've set up the hospital tank just in case but what the view, do I monitor her, move her or dose the whole tank (but my issue with this is I don't actually know how much water is in the main tank with all the deco.

PS hope the photo works.

It does look a bit like an injury rather than an infection. And infections usually get worse rather than stay the same.
I would be inclined to just monitor her for now. The time to act is if the white seems to be spreading.

Your gourami is stunning. The spot looks a bit rounder than simply a raised scale around the mouth which some of my fish get from pecking and chasing one another - does it look fluffy or fungusy at all?

As it's neither worse nor better, and she's eating and behaving normally, I'd leave it alone for now. As you say, and light of previous adverse experiences, you don't want to move and treat her unless you absolutely have to, both of which are stressors; currently, I don't think it's necessary to treat her unless the situation changes in any way, so I'd just monitor her for now.

As for measuring how much water is in a tank, generally, 10% is deducted for decor plus whatever amount from the top (based on an estimate) if you don't have it filled to the brim.

Hope that helps. I see Sue's also replied while I've been typing, and her response is consistent with mine.  :)

Thanks guys you've reassured me just to keep an eye on her just now. She does do most of the pecking of the others so probably makes sense.

@fcmf Yeah she is a beauty and is the biggest of the 4 girls, and bigger than the guy too. So glad I got them, the gourami's were suggested by @Sue from an early post when I was looking for something a bit bigger in the tank as a focal point. It was a good choice
