Turned the tank lights on this morning and the poor guppy looks dreadful. Looking at it now I think she's got a prolapsed bowel. If anyone has any ideas how to treat this I'd be grateful otherwise I think the poor thing needs to be put out of her misery  :'(  I cant see how I can reverse whats happened to her and I think it would be kinder. I'm so upset :(

I've found an article that uses emulsified clove oil as an anaesthetic, would this be a good idea?

I don't think there is anything that can be done for prolapse I'm afraid. Guppies are just so small that anything you tried along the lines of what a vet would do with a cow would cause more harm then help.

Clove is fine to use.

Current clove oil methods involve adding a dose of 400mg/l to water, and premixing it so that all of the oil has emulsified. The fish is then transferred to this water, after which it will lose consciousness within seconds, and breathing will quickly cease. Eventually the fish will succumb to hypoxia and die, though like other methods this can vary in timescale from fish to fish. It is recommended that the fish be left in the solution for at least two hours.

Thanks Sue. I have clove oil in my med kit fortunately.  I don't know what's worse, finding a dead fish in the tank or having to humanely dispatch one that's still alive.

She's gone to the big fish tank in the sky now bless her   :'(

Unfortunately, whatever animals we keep, they will all die sooner or later. As fish have shorter natural life spans than most, and we usually have more of them than e.g. dogs or cats (I hope!) then one must just get used to the fact that from time to time one will die. We can only do the best for them while they are alive and be prepared to hasten the end if necessary to avoid too much suffering.
