I confess that the main reason I don't use liquid carbon is because of what it might do to my shrimps......
Snap but because of my fish. I was about to buy it and the helpful guy in the LFS warned of the dangers of inadvertently overdosing - my reaction was :yikes: and I decided that my plantkeeping would remain on the "entirely natural" (ie do nothing specific for them) route.

So Ive replaced my gourami and bought 2 tiddler sparkling gourami.  Also replaced the ram with a longfin variety (what they had in the shop at the time, not my normal choice but I thought 'why not!').

Very nice.  :fishy1:

Do you think you've got to the bottom of the problems you've been having ie identified that it was a CO2 issue or maybe that it's something else?

I can't be 100% sure if I'm being totally honest but its by far the best theory I've seen. I've no reason to believe the new fish won't be completely healthy.  I'm slightly worried that my pH might be affected but this is manageable with regular testing.

I am also hoping the plants will actually end up doing better as a result of a) no liquid carbon (it is well known that vallis don't like it for example), b) more fish waste (my test results are always 0s or very close).

One of the useful things about posting about your tank on this forum is that you can track back through events like a diary.

Unfortunately both the tiddler gourami I added in Feb have now passed away. They didnt seem to grow a lot actually which also concerns me... dont know if anyone has ever had a similar experience?
Anyways, I don't seem to be having much longevity out of them (5 months) so will give them a miss from now on.

I did appreciate their different behaviour though... does anyone know of if anything similar (small, lives higher in the tank and with a bit of personality)?

In other news I found a shrimp stuck inbetween two parts of a filter guard/media holder thing today which ended in me having to cut the plastic and bend it back to rescue it... stupid thing... it must have been there a while to get so stuck whilst feeding on the tasties on the filter media!

I've had a bit of a shrimp explosion recently.  The new ram just doesn't view them as food... that said theres not been any baby shrimp for a long time so who knows...

Cories doing well too though I find it hard to tell if they are getting enough food with all the shrimp around...

Cleaned the filter media out today... which was definately due! Have hatched a plan to diy build an external filter including heater in a tupperware though my wife needs a little convincing first.

But of a ramble but a brief update... everyone else doing swimmingly  :fishy1:

This post got me thinking... it might be that my 'tank' is infected with iridoviris...  the symptoms match, species involved match and it fits with the irregular pattern of deaths/timescales etc.

I will research further in the morning as to how I can get back to a place where I believe the 'tank' is clear of it.  This may take many months of the tank effectively being placed into a quarantine state. Fortunately not all species are affected...

More to follow...

Sorry to hear about your gourami, but glad that the others are doing well.

Please keep us updated on your tank.

I'm sorry to hear that. I do wonder if honey gouramis are suffering the same problems with overbreeding as guppies and neon tetras, which used to be hardy fish years ago but nowadays are delicate fish. The first honeys I had about 15 years ago were great, but the ones I had more recently never lived as long as the first ones.

If the other fish in the tank do well over the next few weeks, it should be safe to get more fish. But this time I would avoid any gouramis. It will take a bit of research to find a different species that meets your requirements and that you like.

@Sue
It was sparkling gourami... even more surprising as they shouldn't be too interbred yet.

The information on the web about iridovirus is very contradictory about species affected etc so that's not got me anywhere.
