Coping with a heatwave

Usually I can keep the temp of my tank down to keep the fish happy but in this heatwave I have no idea what to do, temp on the tank is between 29 during hotest part of the day and 27-28 at the lowest.

Can I have some help on how I can deal with this please?

There are 2 things you can try.

Open the lid or even  remove it. Arrange a fan so it blows across the water surface. This evaporates the water; water uses energy to evaporate and that energy comes from the heat of the water. It's the same principle as us sweating to cool us down.

Collect a few plastic pop bottles. Fill them almost full of water (leave a bit of space as water expands when it freezes), screw on the lids and freeze. Use them one at a time to float in the tank. When the ice has melted, put another one in the tank and refreeze the melted one.

Here's a list of some things you could try; No guarantees

  • Try and keep the room itself as cool as possible.
  • Keep the curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
  • Turn off any electrical gizmos you don't need.
  • Opening the windows might feel good, but it doesn't necessarily lower the air temperature.
  • Performing a water change can also lower the temperature if the water you add is colder than the tank water.
  • Before freezing Sue's bottles, add salt to the water(The water in the bottle, not your tank)
  • Don't use dark coloured curtains on your windows, especially on windows that get the sun
  • Add a porch or an awning to any windows that aren't shaded.

And finally, use your common sense.

It lowers the freezing point of water - hence spreading it on the roads in winter. Either that or it's a conspiracy with the motor manufacturers to make my Transit rust faster!

Normal table salt (there is only one sort of salt.... NaCl ....... all these 'posh' salts are a rip-off for the gullible) but I wouldn't know how much. Just add 'some'.
