My new guppy is (almost) dead!

I got a new guppy yesterday along with two new platies. All swimming around happy as Larry until about half an hour ago. Now my guppy is lying vertically in a plant - motionless! Have tested the water and all seems fine. I am feeling really quite sad - first fish I've lost. Any ideas what could have happened?

It is very likely to be a poor quality fish. Guppies are renowned for this. A lot of very experienced fish keepers won't keep guppies because of their tendency to just die.

It is thought to be due to the inbreeding that goes on to develop the strains and the breeders using any fish regardless of health issues to breed from if the colour is what they are looking for - they breed weakness into the line.

Thanks Sue. We have two already - yellowy green - and they were harassing each other a bit (both males) so we thought we'd put another in to see if that helped. The bloke at LFS persuaded hubby to get a pinkish finned one - very pretty. Won't be getting any more! Should I go in and tell the fish shop? It had obviously survived for some time before it came to us. Are they just super sensitive to water differences? Are platies any tougher?? I am worried about these now!

Given the state of guppies, they probably are sensitive to changes in water. Platies aren't as intensively bred as guppies but I have heard comments about people saying they are going the same way as guppies  :-\

Oh dear!! I hope the platies don't go the same way! Thanks for your help anyway.

Looks like the Zen master's back!

Does that relate to a now deleted post, rather than an announcement of your secret superhero identity??  :o

There have been a few posts recently by a user (or users) that are totally irrelevant to fish though they might make sense to someone into zen or some other far eastern thing.
Robert beat me to this one, I've been out all morning with my husband buying decorating stuff, so i don't actually know what this one said.

Think I know the one you mean, although I must say that Colin revealing his secret superhero identity would have been far cooler!  ;D
