Absolute Disaster!!

Went to feed my baby celebes tonight and noticed what looked like a dead assassin snail in there. Hooked it out quick for a check and yep it was dead, on closer inspection I found other dead assassins and some very sick looking baby celebes with clamped fins. Did a water check and the results were fine BUT almost all my assassins are dead. I took the babies out and sifted the substrate and found more dead assassins under the sand. I have no idea what the heck has happened, the temp is fine and the filter is working. I'm at a complete loss!

Oh no that's terrible! :-[

I'm sure you've considered everything ten times over but just some thoughts off the top of my head.

Have you done the water tests a couple of times just to be certain?

I presume you stir up your sand occasionally to stop the noxious gas build-up.

Have you done anything different, added anything new recently?

I do hope you get to the bottom of the issue. Good luck.

Copper? Inverts can't stomach the stuff and the dead snails would be giving off pollutants whilst they decompose which could be upsetting the fish... just a thought.

Sorry for your loss too.

No copper there was no reason for it to be there, double checked water chems and its all fine. I did find what I think was a mosquito larvae. Could they carry anything? This tank was Franks old tank and was cycled empty for quite a few weeks before my baby celebes were put in. What ever has gone wrong has been in the last 4-5 days and the mosquito larvae is the only unusual thing.

It's impossible for the mosquito larva to be responsible!
However, the question is where did it come from?
Have you used an unusual source of water which might have contained both the larva and some type of pollution that has killed the snails? Whatever, you can be sure that it is a chemical cause, which does not necessarily mean one of the things that we normally test for.

I used mains tap water and heated it with water boiled in the kettle like I usually do and put in my normal water conditioner. One of the bigger babies was dead when I checked this morning. The weird thing is that it only seems to be the larger fry that are affected, the smaller ones seem ok. (touch wood)

The assassins snails tunnel through the sand so trapped gases shouldn't be an issue.

Could anything have got into this tank and not your others? For example, my husband is sick of the wasps and flies around at the moment and keeps threatening to use fly spray, only I won't let him. Could someone have done that near this tank? Or any aerosol?

Sorry to hear about your snails and and baby CPDs.

Are they in your shrimpery as per your signature or did you move them into another tank if so how are the shrimp are they affected as well?
