Thank you for that and for the clear instructions too. I think I'll go down the clove oil route, the other method sounds way too traumatic and not something I think I'd want to attempt.

That said, the little lad doesn't seem to have deteriorated any more other than increased whitening along his back. He's still eating, still has the energy to see the platys away from any morsel he fancies and still able to swim to the surface. He did actually eat quite well this morning and spent quite a while searching for bits of food in the gravel before he went away to hide in his plants.

I'll try a mirror if I see him out of the plants just to see what he does do. His appearance is pretty awful now though so I wonder what he'll make of his reflection!
