Bentosi Or Ornate Tetra Vs Rosy Tetra

I've looked on Seriously Fish and Fishbase.

SF has a photo of the rosy tetra but not the ornate tetra. The photo of the female rosy tetra looks very similar to the photo in the rosy tetra profile on here, just not as colourful since it's a female. The second male photo does not appear to have any colour at all. The first male photo is of the 'white fin' variety which again looks similar to the photo on here except that the dorsal fin is all white, hence the variety name.
In the notes of SF, it does say that the rosy and ornate tetras are very similar and that rosy was once thought to be a subspecies of ornate. The notes also say that ornate had a dark mark behind the operculum which is missing in rosy - but the photos show a dark smudge behind the operculum.

Fishbase also shows the dark smudge on some of the rosy photos but not all of them. Some of Fishbase's photos for ornate show a dark mark, some show nothing.


In other words, I don't know either 

There’s been a lot of confusion between these two species, especially as both are variable in markings. Seriously Fish has also got caught up in the confusion.

It’s really a simple one. According to the ichthyologist Weitzman, H. rosaceus has a white tipped anal fin, and H. bentosi has a black tipped anal fin. All other differences are common to both species depending on point of origin.

That’s as it stands. It’s really a species-group, which will no doubt at some point be further studied and split into several species.
