Hi everyone,

My name is Clive Kent and I'm 72 living in Spalding Lincolnshire. I've kept tropical fish on and off for many years and I am now once more ready to start again after several years of withdrawal symptoms. The first place I had the bug was during my RAF career while posted in Hong Kong it was so unbelievably cheap in the late 60's, a very different story now, but the advances in equipment available now is just staggering to what it was then.
All being well my new tank and stand should be arriving at the back end of next week and I hope to pick up lots of setting up tips on this forum/site which I must say looks very informative indeed, also looking to make new friends on here too.

Clive

Welcome to the forum Clive
I am fairly new to tropical fish keeping, but I have learnt so many useful things from the people on this forum, looking forward to hearing all about your tank ideas.

Welcome Clive.

Spalding is just down the A16 from me. I've had a good look through Baytree a few times and they have quite a good range of stuff, but some of the fish looked a bit shabby.

Where do you plan to go for your fish?

Hi Sue,

The tank I have just purchased is a Juwel Rio 180, it is now fully planted up and being allowed to mature for a few weeks befor introducing any fish. It will be a community tank ideally with fish in shoals, varieties to be decided upon at this time.

If you have lots of live plants and they are growing well, you shouldn't need to do a fishless cycle as the plants will use the ammonia made by the fish. But make sure the plants have established before getting the first fish. The way to add fish with lots of plants is a few fish at a time, usually one shoal at a time with shoaling fish. And test for ammonia for a few days after adding each batch of fish to be sure it doesn't build up.

You could always add 1 ppm ammonia to check that the plants can remove it in 24 hours before getting the first fish. No more than 1 ppm ammonia as a lot of plants cant cope with more than that.
