Think you know your tropical fish hobby?

Become part of Thinkfish lore!

Check out the list of the sometimes obscure and common questions that people ask and see if you have an answer!

Most answers should be pretty straightforward and will be moved to here https://forums.thinkfish.co.uk/extended-faq-new-q-and-a's/ after a moderator has had the chance to review things. However, in the event that there are differing opinions then it might need to stay here in this thread a little while longer.

Once we have an agreed settled answer, we'll then credit those who participated/debated the finally agreed answer. Some have simple yes and no answers and could be grouped together and some require a bit more depth and explanation and some are just stupid (but people ask them).

The questions are generally of the form can, how, what, where, will, which etc.Go ahead, pick one for yourself and give it a go!

Just copy a question, paste it as the subject of your post and answer away!

Extended FAQ New Q and A's / Can tropical fish change gender?
« on: October 28, 2018, 01:11:06 PM »
Can tropical fish change gender?
Thanks to @Sue  for this answer!

No. This misconception arises because all fry look female. At puberty, male fish begin to change appearance. Late developing males retain their female appearance for a longer than usual time, and the owner is convinced that the fish is a female which has turned into a male. This delayed puberty is well known with swordtails.

There are some species of fish where subordinate males take on female appearance to avoid being bullied by the dominant male. These so-called sleeper fish may look female but they are male, and never take on full female colouring. If the dominant male should die, one of the subordinate males changes to typical male appearance. An  example of this is cockatoo cichlids, Apistogramma cacatuoides.

What's going on at Thinkfish / Extra Profile controls
« on: August 29, 2018, 09:29:20 AM »
I've opened up user profiles for viewing by other users.

I've also given people the ability to hide their profile from all viewers too.

You can see the new settings in your profiles.

For people who have a known sensitivity to this, I've already updated their settings so that their profiles will continue to be hidden.

If you have a community tank, your profile will also show your tank along with pictures of your fish.

See the settings here https://forums.thinkfish.co.uk/profile/?area=account . and your profile here https://forums.thinkfish.co.uk/profile/

What's going on at Thinkfish / Attachment Size Increase
« on: April 02, 2018, 11:54:41 AM »
Due to an upgrade of the server space, I've enabled for image and attachment file sizes to be increased to 3mb.

Whilst it would be good if you could keep your image file size uploads to a minimum, users should now see less rejections which, for the less technologically advanced should make the experience that little more pleasurable.

This message is for all you lovely subscribers (and future ones of course!) who help support this place with your yearly subscription through PayPal.

Should you decide to cancel your subscription to ThinkFish or don't wish to renew, then please do so before the renewal date.

You can find your current subscription in your PayPal account.

People who subsequently demand refunds after the subscription renewal date will be refunded their monies but through doing so will create a direct cost to us as we have to then pay a refund fee. Please bear this in mind. Things are tough enough as it is, and I can't keep absorbing such costs personally.

It's not a huge amount, but it is a super pain in the rear to go through a refund process, when it need not really be necessary  so please bear this in mind when you subscribe or are doubting the utility of TF to you.

If we aren't adding value to your fishkeeping world, then we are always keen to know why so do drop me a line if this is the case.

Thanks for your understanding

Ps If you donated instead, you need not concern yourself with this message.
