Today in my 10 gallon tank I discovered 4 fry while doing a routine feeding. Very surprised. Very happy. They were immediately transferred to a separate 5 gallon aquarium so they can have a chance to grow. I suspect their siblings have been consumed as dinner by the 5 WCMM adults in there now. These young 'uns measure about 4-5mm long. This development made my day! I was only half expecting it...
Q: Assuming they make it and get bigger, about how long will it be before these fry can go back to the general tank? And if there is a divider up with 2mm mesh would that help speed up their reunion with the adults?

I will be watching my WCMM gang closely at feeding time to gauge how large their mouths are, but I don't remember them as being particularly large.
I'd guess that your little ones should be safe in the tank when they look larger than the mouths of the adults, and as long as they have lots of places to hide.

Actually... it's still better than mine, lol...!!! I was completely bilingual as a youngster, but now it's a different story... Mind you, as soon as I step foot in France, it does tend to come flooding back, which is kinda odd... :o

Thanks for the encouraging words. Very exciting. Today the fry are about 3-4mm long, they are about 4-5 days old maybe? To protect them from the grown fish I've gotten a net/basket thing to keep them in the same tank. About 6 little guys in the net; this is a picture of the tank with adult WCMM before the arrival of the fry.

Don't leave them in the net very long, or the fry will become stunted. They can only stay in there for a week, perhaps two but no more than that.

They've been in the net 3-4 days. Can you describe what you mean by stunted? I'd be happy to let the fry out but am afraid they won't be able to survive in the same tank wtih the adults, the fry are still very small (4-5mm). I only have one filter so far--do I buy another and make a new tank for them?

Sue is, I think, referring to the fact that fry require the microbeasts and fauna that grow in a mature tank to feed upon for healthy growth... that or that fish in small containers tend to show deformities due to the lack of space from them to swim and grow. If the fry have made it this far it is reasonable to assume that they can survive in the tank now... and that more may turn up!! As a precautionary measure you could keep the tank well fed with regular small meals twice or three times per day to discourage anyone from feeling the need for a snack between meals...

Fish that are kept in a container - tank or net - that is too small will not grow properly, their bodies easily become deformed.
