Didn't want to hijack another thread, but Sue said that platies like veggies - I don't know much about any other fish food apart from flakes. What veggies should I feed my platies and how often? Will my other fish - silver tip tetras and cherry barbs eat veggies too?  ???

Most fish will eat veggies including those that aren't supposed to. The easiest one to feed is peas. If you have some for your dinner, just keep a few back; or microwave a few in water for a minute. Pop the insides out of the skin and chop small enough to fit in your fish's mouths. If you have gravel I found it best to do this the day before a water change as some bits got trapped between the bits of gravel. With sand, the fish usually find it all.
For fish like plecs a slice of courgette or cucumber (courgette has more nutritional value) skewered on something stainless steel such as a teaspoon to make it sink. Platies will have a go at that as well. Remove any left after a day as it makes the water go yucky when it goes off. If you don't eat courgettes, you can cut one into slices and freeze it till needed.

Those are the only vegetables I've tried with my tropical fish, though the fairground goldfish I started with also gobbled down chopped spinach.

Any other veggies anyone?

Great, thanks Sue - it'll be nice to have something in the house that likes veggies - the kids are always turning their noses up at them! I'll give the peas a go the day before my next water change  ;D

mine are quite partial to some lettuce , i weight it down so it sits on the bottom and the shrimp enjoy it and the kissing gourami have a good go at it but my clown loaches adore it and tear it to bits as they eat there way threw it , the only problem with this is it does
get messy and you will need a net to hand to scope some of the bits up that float off

Well we do tend to eat more lettuce than peas in our house! Since I'll only have snails (from today) at the bottom, do you think the other fish would go for lettuce if I left some floating at the top for a while - probably before a water change as Sue recommends  ;)

i have found that with veggies most of my fish will have some of it but i have found it to be better if it is weighted down rather than floating but that could be most of my fish are more bottom feeders , with veggies i have found its a little bit of trial and error and may take a little for your fish to realise its food and tasty , first time i used peas none was intrested in them now the peas hardly get chance to be in the tank a few mins before there gobbled up
