Title: Update on progress
Post by: Mad_BMS on December 21, 2014, 04:57:21 PM
Hi All

You may remember my post back at the end of October when I had an ammonia spike and bacterial bloom and I thought I should update on progress since then. After the tank stabilised I continued the fish in cycle with the rummy nose and Cory's. The cycle completed in November and the water conditions have been great since now only having to do 10% changes fortnightly. I have added another 3 Cory's followed by Platys then finally Guppies the last 2 being the choice of my wife and granddaughter. I now realise I may regret this as the numbers have already increased ;D.

For other newbies I wish I had seen your advice before following shop and strongly recommend you do 'fishless' cycles as suggested here. I am sure that would have been less traumatic than the 10 days of 80% changes on a 340l tank for both me and the fish.

I now have another question, 1 of the male guppies tail is just trailing behind him closed and the dorsal fin is down. The fish itself is feeding and moving around the tank OK even showing interest at times in the ladies however he does not look right. He may also be losing weight any ideas of cause and what I should do with him?

Cheers Tom

Hi :) I'm glad your tank is doing well, and I love your fish choices! How long have you had the guppy for? Unfortunately they're not the most hardy of fish and many arrive already unwell to the fish shop. Can you see anything wrong with his tail? For example is it looking ragged or can you see any discoloration?

Hi Andrea I have had the guppies about 1 week or so and his tail was fine on arrival. A female bought at same time died within a couple days. Rest look fine. There is no apparent damage to tail it just hangs closed almost as if paralysed though he can swim it is a bit jerky. As I say he feeds OK but looks thinner than the other male. Never seen any aggression between them either. Eyes and rest of body look OK as well.
