Is there any concensus on which test kit is the best out there or more than likely which ones to avoid. I am currently looking at getting the API Freshwater Master Kit.

I don't think there's a consensus as such, but that is the one that most people in these parts use.

The only really accurate way in in a lab, but home testers are good enough for our needs. Salifert is reputed to be the best but it works out more expensive (testers cost about the same but do fewer tests) and fewer 'real' shops stock this make.

I use the API test kit. Just bear in mind that fluorescent lights (strips and energy saving bulbs) can distort the colour in the tube for the ammonia test. Compare to the colour chart in daylight whenever possible, or under an old style incandescent bulb or halogen bulb. Even so, a lot of people report never seeing the zero colour even in a well established tank.

I have got the nutrafin kit which shows a zero ammonia reading when compared to the API shows ammonia presence, pretty sure the API one is more sensitive! Compared at my LFS - now purchased that one for home use too! May be wrong as am a newbie  :)
