Some fish don't like being in a tank less than about 6 months old - this being the difference between a cycled tank and a mature tank. I know neon tetras fall into this category, but I'm not sure about cardinals - though they are tougher fish.

Have you found the 'Community Creator' yet on ThinkFish? It's a very valuable tool to keep a plan on stocking levels. You access it from one of the dedicated fish pages. i.e. Click here and it's about half way down the page.

A Selection of Fish in my Fish Community Creator Tanks
Panda Cory (7) - Honey Gourami (3) - Ember Tetra (9) - Lemon Tetra (4) - Cherry Barb (1) - Otocinclus (2) -
Note: The user may not necessarily own these fish, these are tanks that they may be building or researching for stocking purposes

I understand from your other posts that you are currently running this tank empty. Now is a good time to buy some ammonia and start cycling  ;D If you don't cycle it first, a lot of those cardinals are likely to die; they are not the hardiest of fish, though they are reputedly hardier than neons.

If you cycle it and you want to risk it, you could get more cardinals than that since you say you want a single species tank. Those 50 you asked about would be around a fifth of the number you can have if you want to push the stocking to the limit. The idea behind fishless cycling is that you grow more bacteria than would be needed by a tankful of fish so you can stock to around 75% or 80% of the total fish as soon as the cycle is finished.
