Stocking - 64 litre 60cm tank

Hi guys

I am currently fishlessly cycling a 64litre tank 60cm tank (with help from Sue!) so thought I would spend some time thinking about stocking. I will be including 6 Cherry Barbs that are currently in my large tank but other than that I am open to suggestions!  :D

I would love a German Blue Ram (or two) - I would wait for the tank to become a lot more mature though for that. Would 6 Cherry Barbs and two GBRs work? My water is very soft with a PH of around 6.4-6.8. The tank has a gravel substrate and will be planted and decorated with bogwood. It is filitered with an internal power filter.

Any other suggestions anyone?

Kirsty

Rams might be OK if you kept the water at 26/27 deg C. That is right at the top end for the barbs but just about right for rams.
With soft acid water you'd be fine with apistogrammas, if you like the looks of those. They like the same temps as cherry barbs. The most common apistos in the shops are cacatuoides (cockatoo apistos) and agassizi.

If you had sand, I would suggest a shoal of one of the dwarf cory (pygmaeus, habrosus or hastatus).

Someone I knew spent six years trying to keep blue rams. In spite of meticulous attention paid to maintaining the precise conditions they are said to require, he rarely succeeded in getting them to live for more than a year. Rams were delicate fish to begin with and the inbreeding involved in developing the "improved" colours would inevitably tend to make them even weaker. It's possible that some breeding lines are stronger than others, but that would be very difficult to tell when you buy them.
As noted in a recent post, Bolivian rams are more robust, though maybe not as colourful (but more so than you might think).

I would normally recommend bolivian rams, but as they are slightly bigger than 'ordinary' rams, a 64 litre tank might not have a big enough footprint for them. My 60 litre was 60 x 30cm and seriouslyfish recommends a minimum length of 80cm for bolivian rams.

Kirstos, can you tell us the measurements of the tank, particularly the width and depth (that is, front to back) please. For bottom dwelling fish, the size of the tank floor is as important as volume. For example, my 50 litre tank has the same footprint as the 60 litre it replaced so can have the same amount of small bottom dwellers as long as I don't have as many fish in total.

Hi guys

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will take the measurements when I get home later as the dimensions on the website refer to the size of the box, rather unhelpfully.

I had wondered about bolivian rams but my LFS never has any, only GBR's.
