Hi new fishy friends.
My 40L Love Fish birthday present seems to be progressing along well.
Unfortunately though, my 4 Dwarf Rainbow fry that came to me on the piece of planted bogwood are now down to just 1. He is about 6-7mm long now
My 2 Assassin Ninjas Neo and Maurice seem to have done for most of the other uninvited guests :vcross:, but there seems to be something else in the tank. To me they look like 1-3mm long slugs. They move fast, and there seem to be quite a few of them. Are they 'infant' snails without shells?

Hello you!!!!!
Are your bugglies any of these (http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum/showthread.php/34333-Bugs-you-might-encounter-in-your-aquarium)?

Oooh!
I think that they may be flatworms.
I wonder if they got in to the tank with the JBL Nobil fluid I use to feed Sparky? I don't recall seeing them before the fry arrived.
maybe they arrived with the eggs on the bit of bogwood?

I thought plants from reputable dealers were clean when you got them. Baby fish and now ucky wrigglers, that can't be right surely? ???

Crazy isn't it Fiona?
I followed fishcake76's link. I think they are flatworms. Further investigation on line suggests that it may have something to do with over-feeding with the baby fish food stuff.
The really daft thing is that when I bought my pond plants, I gave them a good wash first. Didn't think to do it for my fish tank plants though. You live and learn...

Planarians (flatworms) are all carnivorous, feeding on small organisms, not fish food. They won't harm your fish, the only ones they could harm would be small newly hatched fry which tend not to move around for the first few days. The flatworms won't grow unless there are small creatures in the tank for them to eat, though they may feed on snails if you have them. If there is no food, they'll die out.

I got a dragonfly larvae in some of my new plants once!!! He was a funny looking chap!! I managed to unintentionally kill him off, probably through lack of food. :-\

Oh Moose what colour were they? Maybe thats what I've got
-
Picture in original post Fiona. A sort of white, slug-like thing. Thankfully all gone now. It looks as if Maurice and Neo, the Assassin snails, have done their thing.
-
looks like a nematode some time caused by poor maintenance
and over feeding
-
ok mine weren't white, they were mud coloured.
-
Definitely not a nematode, looks nothing like one. Far more like a planarian (flatworm).
-
planarian are nematoads they can come in a range of colors
shapes and sizes from small white ones to pink with arrow shaped
head
-
Planarians are not nematodes, they belong to a completely different group of organisms. I'm a professional biologist, I make my living by surveying invertebrates, including those in freshwater, I know the difference.

I think there has been quite a bit of mis-identification of these aquatic worms in the hobby. Good to have someone here who knows what he is talking about :)

there more likely to be planarian worms they
are very common in the aquarium they vary in color
and size anything from half mm or smaller up to five or
six mm i have seen them pick black green and white
normally a good gravel cleaning every now and then
controls them
