Me again, full of questions this morning. I've been growing some algae on pebbles for my snails. Following Sue's advice on another thread, I put the pebbles in water, added a slug of ammonia and left them on my windowsill. They've now grown some algae, but I'm a bit unsure about putting them in the tank because of the ammonia. Will they be totally safe to go in? Should I put them in dechlorinated water first?

Hi Diz. I'd perhaps wait for a more scientific/knowledgeable reply, but assuming you're fully cycled I'd probably just give the pebbles a rinse and then pop them in the tank as any residual ammonia is likely to be minimal and should get taken care of pretty easily - I can't see it being any worse than adding extra ammonia to the tank by the way of new fish. On a side note, as well as algae, my snails will happily tuck into a bit of cucumber/peas/algae wafer which I put into the tank for the fish.

The amount of ammonia would be negligible, and the filter would take care of it pretty quickly. If you'd rather, a quick wash won't do any harm, even under the tap - the amount of chlorine that goes in the tank will also be negligible.
