Silly question

It might sound a little stupid, but do I need an air pump in my tank, It's a 60l my filter circulates the water well and I have the output slightly above the water line, so it creates quite a few bubbles. Is this ok by itself?.

Not at all silly... air pumps are usually decorative, but they do have their place if oxygen levels fall during a medication period. If you're disturbing the water surface such that there are bubbles, then it's very unlikely that you'll need an air pump.

The bubbles aren't doing much. As long as the surface is being circulated you're fine. It would be best with the outlet just below the surface pointing up towards it slightly.

When I got my first tanks I thought that they had to have air pumps, so got several with different shaped airstones. It was not until several months later that I understood that the filters were creating more than enough water movement.  ::)
I do still have them and sometimes use them, I had several in my axolotl tanks over the summer to help with evaporation, along with some fans and frozen water bottles, during the summer to keep the temperature down and the oxygen levels up. Same for my temperate tanks.  :)

What kind of airstone/pump do you have, Donna? I would like to get one but all the ones i've seen are large/tacky/expensive.

The one I used for the axolotl tanks in the summer was a large Superfish airflow 4, and I put 2 airstones in each tank. Quite noisy, but I was so desperate to keep the evaporation rates high, and with fans blowing across the water surface as well as frozen water bottles in the tanks I managed to keep the temperature around 20C during the summer.
For a smaller, quieter filter I use the Interpet nano air pump in some of my fish tanks.
