Title: Shoping list for new fishkeeper
Post by: engineer_tom on September 18, 2013, 03:04:35 PM
I have finally got round to setting up my tank it's been sitting in my living room for a couple of weeks now. I am trying to make sure I have everything, or at least have ordered it before I get started.

I have:

Tank: Juwel Lido 100
Filter: Fluval 3 Plus
Gravel Cleaner
Air pump
Lights: 1 x plant, 1 x normal

Ordered:

Filter media: Fluval 3 Plus - Foam
Test Kit: API Fresh Master
Ammonia: for fishless cycle, found it quite amusing that they recommend syringes with it on amazon

Still Need:

Stand: I am trying to find a stand/suitable table second-hand, the tank is quite an awkward size to find a suitable piece of furniture to put it on.
Substrate: i still need to decide on what to get

Is there anything I am completely forgetting?

A syringe for measuring the ammonia accurately
Dechlorinator. For a fishless cycle you don't need one that detoxifies ammonia (and nitrite). And another syringe if you use a concentrated one or pond dechlorinator.
Thermometer, one that goes inside the tank not the kind that stick on the outside. The dial on heaters can be pretty inaccurate.
And speaking of heaters, you didn't mention one - do you have a heater?
Brand new bucket (at least one) for water changes - and perhaps a 'hands off' sign so no-one else will use it

Dechlorinator - you'll see Seachem Prime recommended for cycling with fish because it detoxifies ammonia and nitrite. But it also messes with the ammonia test for 24 hours after adding it. Other makes also detoxify ammonia but not nitrite - but I don't know if they mess with the ammonia test too. With a fishless cycle you don't need to detoxify anything. All you need is something that removes chlorine (and chloramine if that's what your water company uses) and removes heavy metals.
