This fish keeping lark is driving me nuts! Did my usual check this morning to find I was missing a tetra. Looked everywhere I could think of - underneath tank decorations, in the filter, down the back of the tank etc. I've been trying to count and recount them all morning while they were zipping about from one end of the tank to the other. I finally decided that the missing one must be dead and lying on the substrate somewhere, so the only thing to do was hoover the tank and make sure I got it that way. Just as I put the siphon in, I did one more count, and lo and behold, I'm back up to 8!
I've a horrible feeling that they're all sniggering at me! >:(

Fish are like that ;D I've given up trying to count my little fish.
Wait till you have something like dwarf cichlids and want to photograph them. They come to the glass and stare back at you so the only photos you can get are of a head and pair of eyes ;D

Ohhh my word!! I actual burst out laughing when I read this :) and I know the feeling Diz the only time I'm guarenteed to see them all is at feeding time.

I suppose that's it, once you've kept fish for a while you probably accept that they're always going to keep you guessing.
I should probably just accept that now and avoid the hassle of trying to kid myself that I'm in charge! :D

There are (supposedly) six neon tetras in my tank - I regularly see five of them swimming round together and have been convinced on many occasions that the sixth one has died.... then suddenly I'll see six of them! No idea why the sixth one (presuming it's the same fish) doesn't swim round with the rest of 'em. Even at feeding time, they all dart about so quickly it's impossible to count. Debating whether or not to get a couple more to add to them (after losing one of my black widow tetras, I think I'm okay with a couple more). Maybe neon no. 6 is very shy... :fishy1:

if you really want some fun you should come count the shrimp in my tank there is 17 of them and i try every day to get a count 8 10 12 only 2 days a week you see all 17 of them if your lucky one is cucumber day other is tank clean day , they have a death wish and follow the siphon tube around
The really scary thing is i have 4 snakeskin gourmai in there and there very large and sometimes you can look at the tank and not see one of them there so good at hiding

It's amazing really, it's a defined amount of space, so the missing culprit has to be in there somewhere and yet you just can't see it!!
I think you're all right. This is just something that fish/ shrimp do and the only thing to do is accept that camouflage and winding their owner up is their particular area of expertise. Still think they're laughing at me though! ;D
