Hi. I returning ti fish keeping after 30 year and a lot has changed so really i'm a newbie. I have purchased a tank hood and lights but thats it. Tank is 420 litres. Next I am looking at filters and to be honest I'm confused. So many to choose, so what do I need. I was thinking and outside to fit in the cabinet underneath but thats as far as I go. I want a planted tank and when I get sorted to go back to Discus, which is what I kept 30 years ago. Help please.

With that sized tank, definitely go for an external. The Rolls Royce of external filters are by Fluval and Eheim.

You'll find the Fluval range here https://uk.hagen.com/Aquatic/Filtration/External?brand=Fluval with the manuals in the Useful Tools menu at the top of the page - I always read the manual before buying anything from filters to tumble dryers  :)
Eheim filters here https://www.eheim.com/en_GB/products/technology/external-filters with manuals given in the downloads section with the technical specs for each type of filter.

I can't comment on externals from personal experience as I have internals, but other members have externals and can tell you which brands they like and why.

One thing I do know about externals is that you can customise the media, you don't have to use what they give you. For example, most of them come with carbon, either a bag of granules or impregnated in a sponge. You don't actually need carbon. Keep some in the cupboard in case you ever have to medicate the tank and need to remove the med afterwards, and fill the space in the filter with sponge or ceramic media.

I would also encourage you to think about an external heater as this will mean all you have to have in the tank equipment wise is the inlet and outlet of the filter which is the best you will get.  This make for a much more natural and clean look.  I have recently purchased an Eden 522 which is rated for 300 litres and includes a 300w heater.  I have had no leaks or issues with it so far and the prices for these are very good.  I'm afraid I can't compare with other brands/filters as this is my first external.. I haven't even cleaned it yet!!

@Steve Durston Yep fully agree the external route, that or a sump but that would be a steep learning curve and the externals are pretty much plug and play Have a look at the pondguru’s YouTube site he did a nice explanation a couple of weeks ago which I would agree with. He sells a type of media and pushes it hard in the video but the basic principles are exactly what I have found work very well. Take your own view on his media I’m sure it’s good stuff and will definitely work as well as any other, but I’m not too sure if there is any real data to backup the claims of Nitrate reduction
