Title: Note of warning re the dangers of ornaments
Post by: suep on July 14, 2013, 06:32:26 PM
I am new to fish keeping (5 months) and had a problem this week that I would like to highlight to new fishkeepers. I had a polyresin ornamental aquarium log in the tank (L 23cm X W 14cm X H 10cm). I have a dwarf guarami which got stuck in one of the branches this week. I had to push it out eventually but it now has scarring on it's side. I have now removed the log and put in a barrell which has larger holes. I assumed a fish would not try and get through a hole which was obviously too small for it. However they dont have polyresin logs in the wild I guess. Anyway, I just wanted new keepers to think about what ornaments they put in the tank.  :-\

Thanks for the warning, I would also have assumed that the fish wouldn't have tried to go into a hole too small.

Hope you DG gets better.

Very good advice, I've been keeping an eye on my decorations for a couple of weeks now, as the biggest of my fish is nearing the size where some of the holes will soon be too small for her to fit through.  I assumed she would just stop trying to use those holes, looks like I'll have to be more vigilant and swap them for something else,  :(

Fish are stupid enough to get themselves stuck. Bettas have a reputation for it, and gouramis are related to bettas. I have half a terracotta plant pot as a cave in my betta's tank, and after reading of the stupid things bettas do I siliconed some plastic craft mesh over the hole on the bottom of the plantpot.

I wouldn't have thought about this either! Sorry to hear about your poor gourami, how is he getting on?

He seems to be fine thanks for asking. He's acting fairly normally (chasing his female off when she gets too near any food! eating normally, etc. He reminds of the angelfish in the tank on 'finding Nemo'.  ::) I was really gutted because he had such beautiful colouring and was my favourite in the tank! I still love him to bits though  ;)
