male betta compatibility

i will soon be starting a 70 litre freshwater tropical tank and am keen on the idea of putting one male  beta  in it.
the question is what else will it be compatible with it?
a group of 5 small colourful species (an inch or so in size) plus two more individuals of a similar size to the fighting fish will be nice.
also, could i add a shrimp or two. maybe a sort of crab as well?

There are problems with tank mates for fighting fish. Many bettas will not accept any tankmates at all, others are so laid back they can get bullied to death.

In general terms, you need to avoid brightly coloured fish, especially those with long tails. Male bettas are not that bright and they mistake these types of fish for other male bettas and attack them. The best tank mates are plain monochrome fish and those that live on the bottom of the tank - eg corydoras.

I think you will run into problems keeping a betta with colourful tank mates, especially if you choose fish like tetras or barbs as they are likely to nip a betta's fins.
Shrimp can be OK or the betta might decide to eat them. Crabs are a definite no - they are a no with any fish. Fish and crabs should not be mixed, there is the old saying that you shouldn't keep fins and claws together.

I would look for a different centrepiece fish, I'm afraid.

It's one of the frustrating sides of tropical fish keeping - fighting fish (bettas) are gorgeous but just don't play well with others! My other half keeps saying how much she likes them but I have to keep saying we can't have one because they just aren't compatible with many of my other fish  :(

Some fancy male guppies could perhaps get close in terms of colour and fins and aren't likely to attack anything but could get attacked by anything prone to fin nipping. Guppies can also be a bit fragile owing to the breeding methods which produce the colour variations.
