Found this swimming about in the dirty water after a water change! I got such a fright thought I'd scooped one of my embers out!

This is the larva of a damselfly, a small dragonfly. While they are carnivorous, they would not be big enough to be a danger to fish, except very young fry. I can only imagine it came in with plants, can't see any other way one of these could get into a tank, except perhaps if you have used live food??

Thanks for the ID, Richard! I only use flakes for my ember tetras. After previously finding that worm (planaria?) in my tank, I've been so careful adding plants. Poor fish - they've had to put up with a couple of invaders in the few months they've been in that tank.

Thought I'd give you an update - I've now scooped 4 of these out of my tank!

I know when something is up as the fish all hide away in one corner and are really skittish. $:-\$ Hope there aren't any more now.

Blimey!! How big is that beast? If you bought your plants I'd be a tad annoyed with the seller.

That one was about 1.5cm but the biggest I found was 2cm! My poor fish were terrified of it!

I'm not suprised, I've got them in my pond and saw one attack a small stickleback once.
