Freshwater Pufferfish?

I am new to fish raising, I just have a 10 gallon tanks with a few swordtails and passiva betta and and algae eater, and things are going fairly well.

My friend LOVES pufferfish, and i really want to set her up with a puffer and a tank for her birthday. However, her room is fairly small and so I dont want to go above 20 gallons in a tank. I found a great deal on craigs list for a 20 gallon tank, stand, heater, and so on.

Im just worried that if I put one southern fresh water puffer in there, it'll get lonely. Would it be fine if there were some tetras or guppies or something?

I know that puffer's beaks have to be trimmed, but how often? And how difficult is it?

The usual puffer for freshwater is the dwarf puffer, Cariontetraodon travancoricus. These fish should be kept alone as they don't play nicely with other puffers or with different species of fish. The word I've seen used to describe them is vicious.
They are not the easiest of fish to keep as they won't eat flakes or pellets and need to be fed live, or frozen live, food.
They need a heavily planted tank to do well, and lots of things for them to swim through as they are active, intelligent fish.
Feeding snails is the best way to keep their beaks trimmed, though finding a continuous supply of snails can be a problem.

To be honest, from everything I've read, puffers are not the ideal beginners fish. Your friend may love them but I would think twice about getting her one.
