First Tank, Filter issue.

A quick hello and thank you for having me.

I've recently brought a 2nd hand 120L tank along with a filter. This will be my first tank set up from scratch so please bare with any questions that seem a bit daft. I've cared for tropical fish before, as my father has them, but like I say, never set a tank up myself.

The filter is my issue, I want to clean my filter  before I start a cycle but without having a cycle complete I don't have any conditioned water.  I don't want to use tap water and kill the bacteria, if there is any. What would be the best course of action? I would like to get my tank up and running as soon as possible. I understand that the whole cycling thing is going to take a few weeks.

Hello and welcome.

Was the tank set up and running when you took ownership or was it dry?

If it was dry then you must treat it as brand new with no bacteria, and therefore you can clean with tapwater and start a new cycle.

The method Sue posted here is the one I followed successfully.

If the tank is set up and running then you can rinse the filter medium in the tank water that you remove when doing a water change.

I hope that helps.

It was dry.
That's excellent news. Thank you.
