Hi guys,

I am new here but had been an aquarist for the past 8 yrs, i just bought a new 230 litre aquarium and thinking of setting up an Eheim power filter 240 do you think it will handle a 230 litre?

Thanks

Johann

Hi,

Do you mean a biopower 240, an internal filter? I have one of those in my 125 litre.
I know they say it's for up to 240 litres, but if you decide to get one for your new 230, I would understock with fish that are not very messy. It's not that I think it wouldn't be up to housing enough bacteria, it's the flow rate. The maximum it can do is 750 litres per hour. Eheim is one of the few makes that quotes the flow rate with media in the filter so the actual flow rate is only a bit less than the quoted figure, but even so, it is generally recommended to have 5 times the tank volume per hour. The most the 240 would deliver is 3 times your tank volume per hour.

If you want to stick with internal filters, you could always get two of them. Though to be honest, if I had a tank that big, I'd get an external ;D

Good morning Sue,

Thanks for your suggestion I think i might go for it and if it wont be enough I might get another one like you said  since this particular model is so easy to clean and maintain and also it is low on electricity consumption since its only 8 watts.

Thanks again for your reply

The 240 is the best filter I've had (though I should say I've only had internals).

One thing to watch for - when you get it you'll see it has a cylindrical sponge in the bottom basket, substrat pro in the other baskets and a fine sponge right at the top under the pump. That fine sponge gets mucky quickest and is the media that needs washing most often. Keep an eye on the flow rate, it really drops off when the fine sponge needs a wash.
