It depends how the tank is constructed.

Some tanks have the sides at the same level as the bottom of the tank; this is called flat bottomed.
Some tanks have the sides protruding below the bottom of the tank so that the tank stands on the sides and there is an air gap underneath the bottom of the tank; these are called floating base tanks.

Flat bottomed tanks need a cushion - polystryene, foam etc. The whole of the glass bottom of the tank is in contact with the cabinet and with the weight of water inside, something as small as a grain of sand between the glass and the cupboard can cause the base to crack. The cushion stops this happening.

Floating base tanks do not need a cushion. My Juwel Rio 125 said that use of a cushion invalidated the warranty.

So, is the bottom pane of glass of your tank in full contact with the stand or is their a gap between the glass and the stand?

if its a raised bottom tank you dont put anything underneath
if its a flat bottomed tank you put a sheet of polystyrene underneath it
my rio's a raised bottoms they dont have anything under them if you
do put something under a raised bottomed tank it will fail throw the bottom out

Because it has wooden frame all way round bottom, it was hard to notice that underneath is a rubber frame and little rubber suckers, (talking of suckers :o)lol

Seems like a perfectly reasonable question to me. I'd imagine there'll be plenty of people who don't even think about it, never mind ask about it, so it should be helpful for others.
