My new 40l tank is nicely planted up.

Is it a good idea for me to get a CO2 thingy, to help my plants?

No fish yet, still cycling.

Actually, I can't cycle anymore, or even get on my exercise bike due to having Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Just thought I'd add that in case the DWP decide that I'm cycling about to aquarist shops!

Hi Moose!!

We have two things in common. CFS and fish keeping!!!!  One of which i would gladly NOT have in common ;D

Welcome to the forum. I cant advise you on the CO2 I'm afraid but thought I'd pop in and say hello!!

Extra CO2 is a waste of time and money unless you are going in for a high tech aquascape. If you have a reasonable number of fish, they will produce as much as your plants need, especially in a small tank like yours.

fishcake76: Nice to meet you! Likewise, I'd rather NOT have the CFS and be working etc!

Richard W: thanks for the advice. I won't get one, and I won't make a DIY one either. I've got some JBL Ferro tabs, and the plants are all rooted in the sand. They all look OK apart from the Chamaedora, which is looking a bit ropey. Do I need to do anything else?

I'd wait and see before doing anything else. My plants only really took off growing when I had fish in, which provide both fertiliser and CO2. I've never used fertiliser tabs, but I did start with a soil layer under the sand and so pure sand/gravel may need them.

Unless you're gong into aqua-scaping in a big way; plants before fish, you wont need a CO2 kit.
