I am assuming you can remove the root tabs to start to get the problem under control either by hand or by gravel vacuum if they have disintegrated?

I hope things start to get back to normal soon for you.

Glad you got that sorted, Ally, things like that are very annoying when you don't know the cause.

It is always good to find the cause of the problem so that you can resolve it  :)

Sometimes root tabs can cause problems if used with under-gravel filters, or if there is something which disturbs the substrate (possibly the airstone in your case), which I guess can break up the tab more quickly than designed, and bring a lot of bacteria into contact with food (fertiliser tab & waste caught in substrate) and cause a huge bloom.

It may not be necessary to give up on the root tabs if required for your plants. Yes, remove them for now until you can get your tank cloudiness resolved. After that there are probably a few things that you can try.
Use your airstone close to the surface of the water. It will still help with any oily film after feeding.
Use more substrate so you can bury the tabs deeper, to reduce the risk of disturbance.
Use less tabs than recommended.
Switch to a liquid fertiliser rather than a slow release tab if necessary. These are usually dilute/frequent (weekly) fertilisers, which should not be strong enough to cause a bloom, whilst still providing neutrients for your plants.

I hope that you manage to get the cloudiness under control quickly, and also find a way to keep both your fish and plants happy and health.
Best of luck and please keep us posted on your progress.  :)

I've also learned from a thread on another forum that using terrestrial plant fertiliser is a bad idea because of the difference in chemicals eg lots of phosphate which we don't want in our tanks, so we should stick to fertiliser's made for aquariums. (Not that API tabs aren't made for aquariums, I just though it timely to add that comment  :) )

Hi
I didn't know the plant tabs were slow release I'm pretty sure one broke up when I shoved it under the roots ! Maybe I put too many in , I used three . But now after The water changes it's clear again. So all sorted now !
Thanks everyone . I'm not touching anything now until Sunday's water change !
