Title: Cloudy tank
Post by: Bazz2206 on August 10, 2014, 06:26:50 PM
I upgraded from a 90ltr to a 200ltr tank over a week ago and it's still quite cloudy I thought this was bacterial bloom however I have never experienced this in the past with any tank. Advice seems to be mixed online but I have done 15% water changes every few days and although it has cleared some it's still not cleared fully I tested the water this am and every thing seems fine according to the chart. This being the case can it still take time for the water to clear. Or could it be something else? The fish seem perfectly happy no sickness and lively as ever I know cycling with fish seems to be a contentious issue I had no idea, like I say I have never experienced this before is it just a case of waiting online advice is mixed some saying the tank should be clear within a week some saying several weeks to months any help would be gratefully received. Extra info if helpful tank fluval 200, filter fluval U4

The cloudiness caused by bloom bacteria won't go away with water changes. It won't even go away if you use one of those products that clump fine particles together. It's because these bacteria multiply so fast that you can't keep up with them. They feed on organic matter in the tank - plasticiser in new plastic things like filter casing and decor; chemicals leaching out of the corner sealant etc. They only die off when all their food supply has been eaten. That's why it is very hard to say just how long it will last.

The only harm these bacteria do to fish is by using up oxygen in the water. As long as your filter is creating ripples on the surface there should be enough oxygen for both fish and bacteria.

Since you are fish-in cycling, I hope you are monitoring your ammonia and nitrite levels?

Hi, thanks for the explanation yes I am monitoring ammonia nitrite & everything seems spot on at the minute just the unsightly cloudy water hopefully it will clear given time. There is def enough oxygen getting in the tank so it's just a waiting game by the looks of it
