Title: Advice needed please re danios species and schooling
Post by: suep on April 13, 2013, 09:07:42 AM
I have just started the hobby and a few weeks ago finished fishless cycling a 110 litre tank and now starting to build my stock. I have an external Eheim 2213 filter which gives some good flow and movement. I currently have:

4 zebra danios (building stock to 6)

6 harlequin rasboras

2 glowlight danios (building stock to 6 -I am waiting for more stock to arrive at the LFS, no one seems to have them!)

4 pearl danios (building stock to 5)

I plan to add 2 honey gouramis, 6 neon tetras and a couple of shrimp

Last night I wanted to add to the danio rerio's (zebras) and wanted to get some leopard danios which are the same species but different colouring. The LFS did not have any but suggested I take some gold ring danios which they said was a purer breed and would school fine with the zebras. When I got back and researched it I have found the gold ring danios are danio tinwini.

If I get more gold ring danios it would affect the other stock I wanted to add to the tank. So my question is... will the gold ring school with any other danios? Thanks for your advice.

They will, but they'd be happier with more of their own.

I would ask if the shop will take them back on the grounds they mis-sold them. Another case of a shop saying anything to make a sale - he didn't want you going to another shop for your danios.

I bought some tinwinis last year. They were fine for a few weeks then died one by one. I have one left out of seven. She shoals with my green neon tetras. If yours are the same, you may find your problem solved for you  :-\
I was back in the shop a week after I bought my tinwinis and there were none left. Maybe they sold them all, but maybe there was another reason they didn't have any......

Thanks Sue. I can't seem to find an LFS who will give sound advice above the sale  :(

Just a thought..... your current stock and your proposed additions are all mid-upper tank swimmers. You might think about getting some low tank dwellers instead of the tetras.

One of the three 'dwarf-size' cory cats (link (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish/salt-and-pepper-catfish.html)) or Panda cats (link (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish/panda-cory.html)), or maybe some five-band barbs (link (http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/fish/fiveband-barb.html)). This would leave more 'elbow room' for the others and create interest at the bottom of the tank.

Like I said..... just a thought.

LFS do have a terrible reputation when it comes to advice. To be honest, the zebras and pearls are closely enough related to shoal together, you could leave them at four each. But I don't think the glowlights and tinwinis are close enough to fit in except out of desperation.

Colin is quite right about you have mainly top dwelling fish, and he also thinks coreis would be OK on your sharp gravel (in your other thread)

The database on here only has the dwarf cory in Colin's link. There are 2 more Corydoras pygmeaus (http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/corydoras-pygmaeus/) and Corydoras hastatus (http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/corydoras-hastatus/) . In the community creator on here, I just enter the habrosus cories for all three.

Thanks Guys. It was my son who wanted the neon tetras I have a smaller tank but I don't think they would be suitable as they are fast swimmers? I like the idea of the cory though. May be I'll work on him :)

Its a cubic shape 48 litre.

That is probably at bit small for neons - being a cube, the swimming length is less than a 48 litre rectangular tank. But the tinwinis would go nicely in there, as would ember tetras.

O that's interesting? So I could transfer the tinwini's? I'll consider that one. Thanks Sue
